About Sacha Lodge
Imagine drifting down a narrow, winding creek surrounded by a lush, endless sea of tropical vegetation, with only a hand-carved canoe separating you from the deep waters of the Amazon. As you navigate through the rainforest, unexpected wildlife encounters can occur at any moment, from mysterious movements in the underbrush to magnificent Blue-and-Yellow Macaws taking flight.
Getting to Sacha Lodge
The journey to Sacha Lodge begins in Quito, Ecuador’s capital city. From Quito, guests take a 30-minute flight over the spectacular snow-capped Andes Mountains before descending approximately 8,500 feet (2,600 meters) into the Amazon Basin.
Upon arrival in Puerto Francisco de Orellana, locally known as Coca, a naturalist guide will accompany guests to the private Sacha Lodge house, where modern facilities and lunch await. Afterwards, guests continue to the docks to board a covered motorized canoe for an approximately two-hour, 50-mile (80-kilometer) journey down the Napo River, one of the Amazon’s major tributaries.
Upon reaching Sacha Lodge’s 5,000-acre (2,500-hectare) private reserve, guests take a 30-minute walk along a raised boardwalk toward Lake Pilchicocha. Native paddlers then guide guests across the lake in traditional dugout canoes to reach the lodge.
Accommodations
Sacha Lodge’s accommodations are designed to provide comfort while preserving the surrounding rainforest. The cabins feature high thatched roofs, private shaded terraces and traditional materials, blending naturally into the lush environment.
The lodge has 26 rooms, offering single and double accommodations, with triple rooms available upon request. Each room features a private bathroom with a flushing toilet and hot shower. All cabins are screened against insects, equipped with ceiling fans and furnished with two comfortable double beds.
During free time, guests can relax in hammocks overlooking the jungle and may spot wildlife such as toucans, agoutis and monkeys from their own cabin. A raised lookout above the main bar and lounge provides panoramic views of Pilchicocha Lake and excellent opportunities for birdwatching.
Itinerary
Day 1 – Quito / Coca / Pilchicocha Lake
Take a 30-minute flight from Quito over the Andes to Coca. Upon arrival, meet your guide and enjoy a quick lunch before traveling by canoe for approximately two hours to Laguna Pilchicocha, followed by a 30-minute trek through the forest to the lodge.
In the afternoon, choose from swimming in Pilchicocha Lake, birdwatching from the tower, or visiting the butterfly house. After dinner, enjoy a night walk in search of nocturnal species or a canoe trip looking for caiman.
Day 2 – Canopy Walkway & Rainforest Trails
Start with an early visit to the 36-meter-high and 275-meter-long canopy walkway, offering spectacular views of the rainforest canopy.
Continue with guided hikes along local trails while learning about medicinal plants and rainforest fauna. After lunch at the lodge, choose between a gentle trail along the Rio Napo or the more adventurous Leoncillo Trail in search of the Dusty Titi Monkey.
Dinner at the lodge.
Day 3 – Lagarto Cocha & Flooded Forest
After breakfast, explore the Lagarto Cocha Trail and learn about local traditions and the relationship between native communities and the forest.
At Lagarto Cocha Lake, enjoy a canoe ride with possibilities of seeing anaconda, caiman, capuchin monkeys and squirrel monkeys.
Return to the lodge for time to relax in the hammocks or swim before lunch. In the afternoon, canoe through flooded Amazon forest in search of otters, monkeys and sloths.
Finish at the canopy tower for views of Sumaco Volcano, when conditions are clear, and enjoy a spectacular sunset. Return by canoe as the sounds of frogs and caiman accompany the journey. Dinner at the lodge.
Day 4 – Return to Quito
Enjoy an early breakfast before departing the lodge. The return journey is by canoe and plane, following the same route as the arrival journey.

Day 4 – Parrot Clay Lick & Pantano Trail
Start early with a canoe trip down the Napo River and into Yasuni National Park to visit the parrot clay lick, where you may see four different parrot species at the same time.
Return to the lodge in the late morning for time to relax or enjoy a swim before lunch.
In the afternoon, trek along the Pantano Trail through primary and secondary rainforest, including flooded and swampy areas, with excellent opportunities to observe monkeys and birds.
Day 5 – Return to Quito
Enjoy an early breakfast before departing the lodge for the return journey to Quito by canoe and plane, following the reverse route of arrival.
